Today was another fun 10k in our neighborhood. The race was within the VA grounds (who knew you could make a 10k all within that area??) – and with the “misting” of weather we had yesterday, the sky was blue and the temps were warm.
Steve and I awoke early, got ourselves to the race with plenty of time to spare. We even managed to look over the sponsor booths – including a pet adoption booth. I ended up getting some much missed canine kisses. Then, off to the race.
The run itself was good – uneventful, but pretty. I used my heart rate monitor and it was at 80-90% the entire race. The average was 174 but I topped out at 195. Yowch. Ah well…. I was consistent with my slow and steady 11 minute / mile pace. Super Husband was there with his bright red “Homestar Runner” shirt – so I saw his smiling face as I was on the course.
On the final 0.2 mile stretch (otherwise known as the Chute), I bumped it up a notch and sprinted to the finish. Steve was there with his smile and the camera – even gave each other a “high five” as I ran through.
The nice, unexpected thing was – we received medals. Cute little medals with the pumpkin logo. Nice! I admit, I don’t expect medals at the smaller, local 10k’s. That was a nice little “treat” for Halloween.
After a nice walk, we grabbed some pumpkin pancakes and made our way home. After a nap – Steve indulged my taste for a pumpkin ice cream cone. Yummy. My favorite – and I only have it once a year.
Onward, upward! This was officially my last race for Toyota during the 2007 season (the season ends 10/31/07). I hope they continue the Sponsored Athletes again next year!
